To start an online consultation business in India, pick one clear 1:1 offer, set a fixed ₹ price per session, publish a booking page where clients choose a slot and pay by UPI upfront, send automatic WhatsApp reminders, and write a short cancellation policy. Most service providers do not need GST registration until turnover crosses ₹20 lakh a year.
This guide is for 1:1 practitioners: coaches, therapists, tutors, fitness trainers, nutritionists and consultants who sell their time. It is not about opening a coaching institute with batches and classrooms. It walks through the setup in the order you will actually need it, from your first offer to your first ten paying clients.
What is an online consultation business?
An online consultation business is a practice where clients book and pay for a fixed slot of your time, usually 30 to 60 minutes, and meet you on a video call, a phone call or in person. You sell expertise by the session or by the package. Your costs are low: a phone, a laptop, a quiet room, a video tool and a way to take bookings and payments. The hard part is the admin around the session, which is what this guide is about.
How to start an online consultation business: 8 steps
- 01Pick one offer people already ask you for, with a clear outcome and a fixed length.
- 02Set a ₹ price per session using your target income, billable hours and fees.
- 03Publish a booking page with your services, prices and open slots in IST.
- 04Collect the full fee upfront through UPI, cards or netbanking at the moment of booking.
- 05Check where you stand on GST and keep simple records from day one.
- 06Turn on automatic confirmations and reminders on WhatsApp and email.
- 07Write your cancellation, reschedule and refund policy and show it before payment.
- 08Get your first ten clients from people who already know your work, then ask each for a referral.
Step 1: Choose your first consultation offer
Start with one offer. A menu of eight services confuses new clients and makes you look unsure. Pick the question people already bring to you on WhatsApp for free, and turn the answer into a paid session with a name, a length and an outcome. “45-minute resume and LinkedIn review” sells better than “career guidance”.
| Profession | Good first offer | Length | Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Life or career coach | Clarity session with a written action plan | 60 min | Google Meet |
| Therapist or counsellor | First consultation and intake | 50 min | Video or in person |
| Tutor | Paid demo class with a learning plan for parents | 45 min | Video |
| Fitness trainer | Assessment plus a 4-week plan | 45 min | Video or at the gym |
| Nutritionist | Diet review with a 7-day meal plan | 45 min | Video |
| Business consultant | Strategy call on one problem | 60 min | Video |
Add a second service only after the first one sells. A common second step is a follow-up session at a slightly lower price, or a package of four sessions.
Step 2: Set your consultation fee in rupees
Price from your numbers, not from what a friend charges. Take the monthly income you need, add your monthly costs, and divide by the sessions you can realistically fill. Then add a little for payment fees. For example, if you want ₹50,000 a month, spend ₹5,000 on tools and internet, and can fill 40 sessions, your base price is ₹1,375. Round it to ₹1,400 or ₹1,500. Our full guide on how much to charge for a consultation in India has worked examples by profession.
- Publish one fixed price per service. Clients trust a number they can see.
- Keep a free 15-minute discovery call only if you sell high-ticket packages.
- Raise prices for new clients first, and give existing clients a month's notice.
Step 3: Set up your booking page and availability
A booking page replaces the back-and-forth of “Are you free Thursday evening?” on WhatsApp. Clients see your services, pick an open slot and pay in one go. Set your working hours in IST, block personal time, and add buffer time between sessions so you are not running late all day. Add a minimum notice period, such as 12 hours, so nobody books a slot 10 minutes from now. You can also ask a few questions at booking; here are client intake questions by profession.
- Show your name, photo, qualifications and one line on who you help.
- List each service with its length, price and whether it is online or in person.
- Connect your Google Calendar so personal events block out slots automatically.
- Add one or two intake questions so you can prepare before the call.
Step 4: Collect consultation fees by UPI before the session
Take the full fee at the time of booking. A session that is already paid for is a session the client turns up to, and you never chase money afterwards. You have two common options in India. The first is sharing your UPI ID or QR and checking screenshots by hand. It is free, but every booking needs you to match a payment to a name and confirm the slot yourself. The second is a payment gateway, which confirms the payment automatically and keeps a record of every transaction.
Gateways charge a fee. Razorpay's pricing page lists a 2% standard platform fee on domestic UPI, cards and netbanking, with zero setup fee, and states that “GST (18%) applies on Razorpay's service fee, not on the underlying transaction amount”. On a ₹1,500 session that works out to ₹30 plus ₹5.40 GST, so you receive about ₹1,464.60. The guide on how to collect payments from clients in India compares UPI ID, payment links and pay-at-booking in detail.
Step 5: GST for consultants and coaches: when to register
Under GST, a supplier of services must register once aggregate turnover in a financial year crosses ₹20 lakh. The limit is ₹10 lakh for businesses in Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura. Turnover is counted on an all-India basis under your PAN. This is per the GST Council's registration flyer, which also says small service providers below this limit are exempt even if they serve clients in other states.
The same flyer notes that people supplying services through e-commerce operators are “entitled to avail the Rupees 20/10 lakh threshold exemption for registration”. You can also register voluntarily below the limit, which some consultants do because corporate clients want a GST invoice. Once registered, you charge GST on your fee and file returns. Rules change and some services have special treatment, so confirm your own case on gst.gov.in or with a chartered accountant before you decide.
Track every session, the amount received and any refund in one place. It makes the GST threshold easy to watch, and your CA will thank you at income tax time.
Step 6: Send booking confirmations and WhatsApp reminders
Every booking should trigger a confirmation with the date, time in IST, the meeting link or address and your reschedule policy. A reminder the day before helps clients who simply forgot. Send reminders on WhatsApp, where Indian clients actually read them, and copy the same details to email so they can find the link later. Copy-ready wording is in these appointment confirmation messages.
Set a boundary for WhatsApp too. Tell clients which messages you answer and when, for example within one working day, and that session content stays inside sessions. This protects your evenings and keeps the practice professional. An away message on WhatsApp Business can say this for you after hours.
Step 7: Write your cancellation and refund policy
A policy you write before the first booking saves an awkward conversation later. Keep it to four lines and show it on your booking page before payment. A common structure: free reschedule up to 24 hours before, no refund for cancellations inside 24 hours, a no-show counts as a used session, and a full refund if you cancel. Our cancellation policy templates have copy-ready versions by profession.
Reschedules are free up to 24 hours before your session. Cancellations inside 24 hours are not refunded. If you miss the session without notice, it counts as used. If I need to cancel, you get a full refund or a new slot of your choice.

Step 8: How to get your first clients for online consultation
Your first ten clients usually come from people who already trust you. Tell your network clearly what you now offer, what it costs and how to book. One clear post beats ten vague ones.
- Put your booking link in your Instagram bio, WhatsApp Business profile and LinkedIn headline.
- Post on WhatsApp Status once a week with one tip and the link.
- Message past colleagues, students or clients one by one, not as a broadcast.
- After each session, ask for a review and one referral while the result is fresh.
- Write answers to the five questions clients ask you most, and share them.
Common mistakes when starting a consultation practice
| Mistake | What it costs you | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Taking payment after the session | Unpaid sessions and awkward follow-ups | Collect the full fee at booking |
| Booking over WhatsApp chat | Hours of back-and-forth and double bookings | Share one booking link |
| No written policy | Refund disputes and last-minute cancellations | Show a 4-line policy before payment |
| Too many services at launch | Confused clients who do not book | Launch with one offer |
| Pricing by guesswork | Burnout at a fee that does not cover costs | Use income ÷ billable sessions + fees |

See how booking pages work, or set up your page on the free Sloth plan, which charges 5% only on paid bookings. Sloth Active is ₹399 a month with 0% commission. Razorpay's gateway fee of about 2.4% applies on both plans.
Online consultation business FAQs
Common questions
Do I need a licence to start an online consultation business in India?
Most coaches, tutors, trainers and business consultants do not need a special licence to sell 1:1 sessions online. Regulated professions such as doctors, psychologists and lawyers must follow their own council's rules. Check your state's shop and establishment rules if you open a physical office.
Is GST registration compulsory for online consultants?
No, not below the threshold. A service provider in most states must register once aggregate turnover crosses ₹20 lakh in a financial year, or ₹10 lakh in Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura, according to the GST Council. You can register voluntarily earlier if clients need GST invoices.
How much should I charge for my first online consultation?
Divide the monthly income you need plus your costs by the sessions you can fill, then add about 2.4% for gateway fees. For example, ₹50,000 income plus ₹5,000 costs over 40 sessions gives about ₹1,400 per session. Adjust after your first 20 bookings.
How do I take consultation fees online without a website?
Use a booking page link that shows your services and takes payment by UPI, card or netbanking at booking. You can share it on WhatsApp, Instagram and LinkedIn. It works as a one-page website and confirms bookings automatically once the client pays.
Should I offer free consultations to get clients?
Offer a short free discovery call only if you sell packages worth several sessions. For single sessions, a paid first session filters out people who are not serious and reduces no-shows. A modest first-session price works better than free for most new practices.
