To start yoga classes online in India, choose one style and audience, fix one or two batch timings in IST, and run a free trial class on Zoom or Google Meet. Charge a monthly batch fee collected by UPI, share the class link privately on WhatsApp, and promote with short Instagram videos and student referrals.

This guide covers the parts most online yoga guides skip for India: morning batch timings, rupee pricing maths, monthly UPI collection, keeping class links out of forwarded chats, and getting your first 20 students without paid ads.

What you need before you start online yoga classes

  • A teaching qualification you can show students, such as a recognised certificate or diploma.
  • A clear floor space, a mat, and a phone or laptop that can frame your full body side-on.
  • Good light from the front, and a small Bluetooth mic or earphones so cues are audible over music.
  • A video platform account (Zoom or Google Meet).
  • A health intake form for new students.
  • A way to take bookings and payments, and a WhatsApp Business number for students.

On qualifications: the Ministry of Ayush's Yoga Certification Board runs a tiered scheme with levels such as Yoga Protocol Instructor, Yoga Wellness Instructor and Yoga Teacher and Evaluator. The Board says certification "helps in promoting Yoga as career skill which till date is an unorganized career option" (Yoga Certification Board). Many students, and most corporate clients, will ask what certificate you hold, so keep a copy ready to share.

Zoom or Google Meet for online yoga classes?

Both work for yoga. The free limits decide which one fits your class length.

PlatformFree plan limit (group class)Participants on free planGood for
Zoom Basic40 minutes per meeting100Short sessions, gallery view to watch alignment
Zoom Pro30 hours per meeting10060-75 minute batches, recurring links
Google Meet (free account)1 hour for 3+ participants10045-60 minute batches
Google Meet 1:124 hours2Private and therapy-style sessions

Sources: Zoom pricing lists 40 minutes on Basic and 30 hours on Pro, each with 100 participants. Google Meet Help lists a one-hour limit for meetings with three or more participants and 24 hours for one-on-one meetings. Check both pages before you plan your schedule, since limits can change.

Whatever you pick, ask students to keep their camera on and set it side-on at floor level. You cannot correct a posture you cannot see.

Batch timings that work for Indian students

Most working adults practise before office or after it. Plan around those windows, in IST, and add a weekend slot.

BatchTypical IST slotWho joins
Early morning6:00-7:00 amWorking professionals, early risers
Mid-morning10:00-11:00 amHomemakers, seniors, freelancers
Evening6:30-7:30 pmOffice-goers, students
WeekendSaturday or Sunday, 7:30 amPeople who cannot commit to weekdays
NRI batchSet to the student's eveningIndians abroad who want a teacher from home

Start with one batch. Add a second only when the first is full. Two half-empty batches tire you out and look less active to new students.

How much to charge for an online yoga class in India

There is no official fee scale for yoga teachers, and rates differ by city, experience and the kind of class. Instead of copying a number, build your price from four inputs: the income you want, the hours you can teach, the batch size you can manage, and what similar teachers charge. For a nearby benchmark, see how much personal trainers charge in India.

  1. 01Write your monthly income target from yoga.
  2. 02Count the live teaching hours you can sustain each month, leaving time for your own practice.
  3. 03Divide target income by hours to get your hourly rate.
  4. 04For a group batch, divide that hourly rate by the number of students you expect, then multiply by the classes per month.
  5. 05Set 1:1 sessions at roughly your full hourly rate or more, since they need preparation and full attention.
  6. 06Check three or four local teachers' Instagram or WhatsApp rate cards, and adjust.

Worked example (illustrative numbers only): Priya in Pune wants ₹40,000 a month and can teach 50 live hours. Her hourly rate is ₹800. A 20-class monthly batch with 10 students needs ₹1,600 per student (₹800 x 20 ÷ 10). She prices the batch at ₹1,500 for early sign-ups and ₹1,800 after that, and charges ₹900 for a private 1:1 session.

If your yearly turnover grows large, check GST. The CBIC GST FAQ says registration is generally required once aggregate turnover crosses ₹20 lakh in a financial year, or ₹10 lakh in special category states. Ask a CA how your service is treated.

Monthly UPI batches: collecting fees without chasing

Monthly batches give you predictable income. They also give you a monthly chore: collecting fees from every student. A fixed routine keeps it short.

  • Fix one due date, such as the 1st, for every student in a batch.
  • Send the fee notice with your UPI ID three days before the due date.
  • Ask students to put their name and batch in the UPI note.
  • Share the next month's class link only after payment is received.
  • Keep one sheet: name, batch, month, amount, date paid.
  • Offer a quarterly option for regulars so you collect four times a year instead of twelve.

Namaste {Name} ji, November batch (6 am, Mon-Fri) ki fee ₹1,500 hai, 1 November tak. UPI: {your UPI ID} Note mein apna naam aur "6 am batch" likh dijiye. Payment ke baad November ka class link bhej doongi. Dhanyavaad!

Sharing Zoom and Meet links on WhatsApp safely

Class links get forwarded. A link that reaches non-paying people fills your gallery with strangers and makes paying students feel cheated. If WhatsApp is also where students book, see this guide to managing class bookings on WhatsApp.

  • Send the link 1:1 or in a members-only WhatsApp group where only you can post.
  • Use a passcode and a waiting room on Zoom, and admit only names you recognise.
  • Change the link at the start of each month when the new batch list is fixed.
  • Ask students to join with their real name so you can admit them quickly.
  • Never post the class link on Instagram, a public group or your WhatsApp Status.

Health intake: ask before the first class

Online students cannot be adjusted by hand, so you need to know their health history before they start. Keep the form short and ask about recent surgery, back or knee injuries, blood pressure, pregnancy, and any condition a doctor has asked them to watch. Advise anyone with a medical condition to check with their doctor first. Our list of client intake form questions has a ready set you can adapt.

How to promote online yoga classes with Instagram and WhatsApp

You do not need ads for your first 20 students. You need people to see you teach and a simple way to book a trial.

  • Post 30-60 second Reels of one pose with one common mistake and its fix.
  • Run a free Sunday community class every month and collect WhatsApp numbers with permission.
  • Put a trial-class booking link in your Instagram bio and WhatsApp Business profile.
  • Share short student feedback, with consent, on your WhatsApp Status.
  • Ask each happy student for one referral, and give both a small discount on the next month.
  • Partner with a local gym, physiotherapist or housing society for a demo session.

Our guide to putting a booking link in your Instagram bio shows how to send profile visitors straight to a trial-class slot.

Yoga teacher income in India: a quick way to estimate yours

Income depends on how full your batches are. A simple estimate: (students per batch x monthly fee x number of batches) plus (1:1 sessions x session fee), minus platform, payment and software costs. With the example above, one full batch of 10 at ₹1,500 plus eight 1:1 sessions at ₹900 comes to ₹22,200 before costs. A second full batch roughly doubles the group income without doubling your preparation. Teaching online is one of several ways to make money from home in India.

Where Book A Sloth fits

Book A Sloth gives yoga teachers a booking page at bookasloth.com/yourname for trial classes, 1:1 sessions and workshops. Students pay up-front by UPI, card or netbanking, the booking confirms automatically on payment, and Google Meet links are generated for online sessions. Email and WhatsApp confirmations and reminders go out automatically, and students book with a phone OTP, with no app to download. See the Book A Sloth page for yoga instructors for how teachers set it up.

Online yoga class FAQs

Common questions

Can I start online yoga classes without a certificate?

You can start teaching, but students and companies often ask for proof of training. The Ministry of Ayush's Yoga Certification Board offers levels such as Yoga Protocol Instructor and Yoga Wellness Instructor, and a recognised certificate makes it easier to win trust and corporate work.

Is Zoom or Google Meet better for yoga classes?

On free accounts, Zoom Basic limits meetings to 40 minutes and Google Meet limits group meetings of three or more people to one hour, per their official pages. For a 60-minute class, free Meet or paid Zoom Pro fits better.

How much should I charge for online yoga classes in India?

Work out your hourly rate from your income target and teaching hours, divide it across your expected batch size, and compare with local teachers. Charge more for 1:1, prenatal or therapy-style sessions than for group batches.

How do I stop people sharing my yoga class link?

Send the link only to paid students, use a passcode and waiting room, admit only names you recognise, and change the link every month when the new batch list is final.

What is the best time for online yoga batches in India?

Early morning (6-7 am IST) and early evening (6:30-7:30 pm IST) suit working adults. A mid-morning batch suits homemakers and seniors, and a weekend batch catches people who cannot commit on weekdays.
